Obituary for Luke Penner - Kingsville Celebration Centre

Passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, on March 21, 2024 at the age of 39.

Beloved son of Garry and Cathie Penner.

Cherished brother of Elaine Hansor, Ruthy Penner (Louis-Philippe Lavoie), and Dan Penner.

Loving grandson of Aggie and the late Harry Thiessen, and the late George and Edith Penner.

Proud uncle of Aggie and Aoife Hansor, and Anouk and Elodie Lavoie.

Luke will also be remembered by his loving aunts and uncles, many cousins, and friends.

Luke had a good childhood with siblings, cousins and neighbourhood kids to play with. Life was simple. He was a pleasure to his parents and grandparents – always a happy boy with lots of energy, smiles and hugs.

Luke had a lifelong love of nature. Camping, fishing, hiking and boating brought Luke times of joy and contentment. As a kid, he loved adventures on the Adams’ farm where he experienced machinery, growing crops and farmwork.

He had the biggest, kindest heart and a witty sense of humour that endeared him to so many.

Luke’s work life began in grade 2 as a newspaper carrier. A number of years were spent every day after school hustling about the neighbourhood, making deliveries to his customers, returning home with rosy cheeks and smiles. While reminiscing with his friends now in this time of reflection, we have come to learn that he subcontracted his route to his other 7 year old friends to manage the workload more efficiently! He was there to supervise but this meant more time to play together when the route was done!

At the young age of 2, Luke spent occasional days with his sister on the family fishing boat captained by their father Garry Penner of the Edith Marie II. When he should have been in high school, he joined the family business as a deckhand. He fast tracked Grades 10-12 and with a GED, put high school behind him, preferring to work with the practical as opposed to academia. He went on to train at Georgian College, gaining a variety of licenses that entitled him to be a Commercial Fishing Captain. At various times he worked as a pool installer, gaining skills in cement work which extended to installations of driveways, sidewalks and foundations.

Progressing to life in his later 20’s, he trained as an industrial electrician in Alberta’s north. The economic collapse of 2008 brought him back to this area where he combined his unique ability to pick up new trade skills and contractor experience to offer his services to the community that he loved here in Windsor/Essex.

Through all of this, Luke struggled with addictions and over the past couple of years fell prey to fentanyl, a plague that is taking our communities by storm. Loss of life to addiction is very real, both before and after death. We encourage anyone who has the compassion and will to get involved, to do so, both in prevention and rehabilitation. We invite you to give generously to Leamington Community Hope Centre in honour of our beautiful son.
