Obituary for Louise Amelia - Chatham Celebration Centre

Louise June Amelia (Smith), passed peacefully surrounded by family at St. Andrews Residence in Chatham on Saturday September 10, 2022 at the age of 94. Many others cherished the opportunity to connect with her over the past few days, weeks and months. Her extended family wishes to express their gratitude for the kind caring staff and residents of St. Andrews. May her memory be a blessing.

Louise, born in Essex in 1928 to Florence and Christopher Smith, who migrated to the area from England. She was predeceased by her loving husband and life long companion Mike Amelia of Chatham (1924-2007) along with brother’s Christopher George, James Charles and sister Florence.

She is survived by her children Tony Amelia and wife Suzanne, Joseph and Mary Beth Ameila, Rachel (Amelia) and Ritchie Clark and Tina (Amelia) and Byron Hodgson and by loving grand and great grandchildren from Vancouver Island to Prince Edward Island. She was also predeceased by her eldest daughter Trudy Winter (Amelia).

Louise’s life began in very modest circumstances during the end of the depression and living through WWII to build a thriving life along side her husband Mike in Chatham. She was strong, independent and enjoyed life and driving her convertible until the age of 90. She loved to knit and was very accomplished. Many of her family members still look very sharp in her beautiful sweaters. She loved to travel, especially to warmer climates and enjoyed seeing much of the world from the Bahamas to Italy, Thailand and Australia. As a younger woman she was in Fashion Shows and crowned Miss Western Ontario 1944. An avid tennis player and golfer she very much enjoyed her friends at the Wheels and Maple City GCC, where Mike, was a past president. Her final words were of family. Louise was determined and brave till her last breath.

There will be a Celebration of Life/Open House at the Alexander Houle Funeral Home in Chatham on Saturday, November 12th from 1:00-3:00 with tributes at 2:30. Donations in memory of Louise to the Cancer Society would be appreciated.
