Obituary for Alice Scott - Kingsville Celebration Centre
Passed away May 15th, 2020 at Chartwell Royal Oak LTC at the age of 97. Predeceased by her husband Richard L. “Dick” Scott with whom she celebrated 50 years of marriage. Beloved mother of Richard Douglas Scott and his wife Colleen Bondy. Beloved grandmother of Richard J. (Alexa) and great granddaughter Olivia who was mom’s pride and joy.
Alice was the daughter of Thelma Wigle and C.R. “Mac” McCallum.
Survived by sister-in-law Joan McCallum. Predeceased by brother Doug McCallum and sister Donna Minnice (Gord).
Loving aunt to Lori Breault (Mitch), Lianne Minnice, Lanny Minnice, Mike McCallum (Debbie), Nancy McCallum, Pat Hickmott, Terry Sims (Sue), Brad Sims (Suzie) and Lana Jackson (Brian). She will also be missed by her great nieces and nephews.
Alice was an extraordinary woman. After attending secretarial school, she was employed by Canadian Canners and the Ontario Hydro. After she married Dick in 1946, she, like most women chose to be a homemaker. She continued in that role after they had their first and only child in October 1947. Meanwhile Dick purchased a small insurance agency in 1949 and named it Kingsville Insurance. In 1952, Dick was offered a job with the Chrysler Corporation and left the business. Alice decided that instead of simply closing Kingsville Insurance, she would take it over temporarily so that all the outstanding bill could be paid and the office then closed. After that was taken care of, she realized that she liked insurance and decided to “make a go of it.” In 1952 she became the president and general manager of Kingsville Insurance. She was ahead of her time-women in the workplace were an oddity then. She was the only woman to own an insurance brokerage in the province of Ontario at that time and continued to own and operate the business for 44 years.
Another facet of her life was her ability as a singer. She sang in the choir (performing many solos), sang at weddings and at concerts during World War II to raise money for the war effort. She had an audition a WJR radio in Detroit and was offered a position there. Unfortunately, due to a variety of circumstances, she had to turn down the offer.
Richard and Colleen would like to thank the staff at Chartwell Royal Oak LTC including Nicole, Razane, Dr. Hayes and all the PSW’s with special thanks to Connie Cox who became Alice’s best friend. Thanks to the charge nurses, Jodie and Alex and the Blue Spruce RPN Miriam who took special care of mom in her final days.
A celebration of mom’s life will take place at a later date, when all of her family and friends can gather together.
